What is empathy fatigue, and why has that term emerged right now? What does the space for empathy look like in care work today, and how is it valued? Who do we empathize with, who is “we,” and who is left out?

In her column, Rosanna Fellman reflects on empathy, community and belonging as part of a larger political awakening. Leila Inanna Sultan writes poetry about whiteness’s relationship – and sometimes inability – to empathy. Linnea Garli has read Susan Sontag and written a thoughtful essay about how far empathy really goes when we face contemporary war and genocide. Does empathy lead to action? Do we have to feel empathy in order to act right? And then we meet philosopher Jonna Bornemark in an interview about feeling for even the more-than-human life.
