Hur?

Astra are looking for contributions for vol. 2/2021, which will be on History!

Writing history is always a kind of identity politics. When we write the histories of our roots, ancestors and previous events, we’re always simultaneously telling something about ourselves and of who we are today. Hence, writing history is a political act, and part of constructing an identity – it creates collective narratives and is both including and excluding. To fully reconstruct the past, or even the tiniest event from the past, is of course impossible; however much we try to be precise, some details are bound to be left out. Looking at the histories of entire nations, it’s often a lot more than just details that have been left out from the history books. Crucial for which histories are being told, included and woven into the now and the future, is the identity and position of the narrator. And, of course, of the ones who are listening. Astra are looking forward to read your contributions on History!

How? Send your abstract/draft/idea (we’re welcoming texts of all genres) to astra@astra.fi. We appreciate a submission with an extensive description and attached draft of your text.

When? Send us your ideas and drafts by Friday the 12th of February. Deadline for finished texts will be the 5th of March.
What? This issue of Astra will be on History. You’re welcome to have your own take on the theme. We encourage submissions that lift the gaze from (and/or problematizes) the history of Nordic majority feminism and write about the histories that tend to be left out (consciously or unconsciously). We are primarily looking for contributions from people who tell their own histories and write about their own roots, but also welcome contributions from people conducting research on the topic. We read Swedish and English, but are open for publishing texts also in other languages, as well as in multiple languages.
